Microsoft Corp. is planning to replace its home-grown Outlook e-mail tools on Apple Inc. and Android smartphones with software made by Acompli Inc., a mobile-applications developer it acquired yesterday, a person familiar with the deal said.
Microsoft paid about $200 million for Acompli so that it can offer e-mail management software that’s superior to what the world’s largest software maker currently has, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the plans are confidential and could change. New Outlook apps based on Acompli may be released as soon as January, the person said.
