The United Nations fell short of a goal of treating 70 percent of Ebola cases in West Africa, even as officials said progress is being made in bringing the outbreak of the deadly virus under control.

In Liberia and Guinea, the 70 percent threshold has been met, while Sierra Leone missed that target, said Bruce Aylward, the World Health Organization’s assistant director-general in charge of Ebola response. In all three countries, the goal of safe burial for 70 percent of those who died from the virus has been met, he said. The UN aimed to meet those benchmarks by today, 60 days after a plan was put in place.
