Amedeo Modigliani’s sculpture of a goddess’s head sold for $70.7 million at Sotheby’s in New York, setting a record for the artist.

“Tete,” created in 1911-1912 from limestone that the sculptor took from a construction site in Paris, had a presale estimate of more than $45 million. The work, from a private collection, has never been at auction, Sotheby’s said.
