Georgia’s former Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said his Free Democrats party is leaving the ruling coalition today, deepening a political crisis that has split the government a day after his dismissal.

Alasania announced the departure after emerging from a meeting with other coalition party leaders in Tbilisi. It was also attended by billionaire ex-premier Bidzina Ivanishvili, who led Georgian Dream to victory over former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s party in parliamentary elections in 2012.
