Turks wondering what kind of neighbor Islamic State will make don’t need to wait for the fall of Kobani -- they can travel about 20 miles east or west.

While a battle rages for the mostly Kurdish town, the jihadist group already controls long stretches of the Turkish-Syrian border to both sides of it. At Karkamis, west of Kobani, Turkish authorities have taken precautions, erecting a blast wall after Islamic State seized the town of Jarablus just across the border in January, and raised a black flag that’s visible from the Turkish town.
