The U.S. prison population dropped by nearly 5,000 inmates this fiscal year and is projected to decline enough in the next two years to empty the equivalent of six federal institutions, Attorney Eric Holder will say in a speech today.
Holder says the drop is a major milestone in the Obama administration’s efforts to reduce prison populations, according to excerpts of the speech released by the Justice Department. With prisons now at 30 percent above their design capacities, none will actually close.
