Belgium overcame a World Cup-record 16 saves by goalie Tim Howard and defeated the U.S. 2-1 in extra time to set up a quarterfinal soccer match against Argentina, which won 1-0 against Switzerland.
Howard and the U.S. held Belgium scoreless until the third minute of extra time in Salvador, Brazil, when Kevin de Bruyne capitalized on a defensive slip to score. De Bruyne then set up substitute Romelu Lukaku 12 minutes later to make it 2-0. U.S. substitute Julian Green volleyed in a score two minutes later, and the Belgians held on for the last 13 minutes to win.
