Flood-stricken England and Wales suffered the wettest winter since at least 1766, according to the Met Office, the government forecaster.

A total of 435 millimeters (17 inches) of rain was recorded across England and Wales through Feb. 24, with four days of winter remaining, the Met Office said today in an e-mailed statement. That’s the most in records that date back 248 years, and eclipses the previous maximum of 423 millimeters in 1915.
