Assad Opponents Urge Arab League to Act on Syrian Membership

Three Syrian opposition delegations met with the head of the Arab League before the bloc’s emergency meeting on Syria tomorrow and urged the organization to freeze the country’s membership, while a separate group asked to be declared the Syrian people’s representative.
Arab League Secretary General Nabil el-Arabi held talks today in Cairo with the Syrian Revolution General Commission, the Local Coordination Committees and the High Council for the Syrian Revolution. In pressing for the freezing of Syria’s membership, the groups also asked for the dismissal of the country’s ambassador to the Cairo-based Arab League, according to a statement they released jointly in the Egyptian capital.
