India Lawmaker, Ex-Politicians Arrested in Vote Buying Case

An Indian legislator and two former politicians were arrested and detained for their alleged involvement in an attempt to buy support in parliament ahead of a crucial 2008 confidence vote.

Amar Singh, a legislator in the upper house of parliament and a former leader of the regional Samajwadi Party who had been charged by police for offering bribes to opposition members, was denied bail by a New Delhi court yesterday and ordered into judicial custody till Sept. 19. He denies the charges.
