California Governor Jerry Brown appointed Michael Picker president of the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates the state’s utility monopolies.

Picker, 62, a former energy adviser to Brown, succeeds CPUC President Michael Peevey, who said in October he would leave after his term expired at year-end. Peevey has been the focus of allegations of back-channel communications between the commission and PG&E Corp., the state’s largest utility owner.
