Boat Sinks on Lake Tanganyika With 129 Deaths, Congo Says

A boat carrying almost 400 people sank on on Lake Tanganyika, killing 129 people, after the pilot lost control in strong winds, according to Democratic Republic of Congo spokesman Lambert Mende.

A further 270 passengers were rescued in the accident on Dec. 12, Mende said by phone today. The vessel was also carrying merchandise, he said.
