Natural gas futures fell to a five-week low in New York as unusually mild December weather crimped demand for the heating and power-plant fuel.

Above-normal temperatures sweeping the lower 48 states over the next five days will briefly recede on the East Coast next week before warmth engulfs the country again Dec. 13 through Dec. 17, MDA Weather Services said. Gas withdrawals from storage last week were probably below the five-year average, based on analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.
