Sao Paulo Retiree’s 25-Mile Water Trek Explains Bond Woes

Maria Helena Medeiros Graciano, a 59-year-old retiree, says she had to travel almost 25 miles to wash her hair and do laundry because of the drought afflicting her home state of Sao Paulo.

“It’s only getting worse,” Graciano, who lives in Itu, 63 miles (101 kilometers) northwest of Sao Paulo city, said by telephone. “I had water on Monday. Before that, the previous Sunday. There’s just nothing coming out of the taps.”
