Lawmakers increased pressure on the Obama administration to keep travelers from entering the U.S. from the three nations with Ebola outbreaks, a step a top health official said would be counterproductive.

Representative Fred Upton of Michigan, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, joined other members of the Republican Party to demand a halt in passengers from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio said late yesterday that the possibility of an outbreak in the U.S. means a temporary ban is necessary. Other lawmakers have said the U.S. should refuse visas to anyone from those countries.
