Mercedes-Benz is recalling at least 39,000 C-Class sedans because of a potential steering system fault that could make turning difficult.

The “steering coupling interlock” was in an open position, when it should have been released from the European factory locked, Donna Boland, a spokeswoman for the Daimler AG unit, said yesterday. The problem, which could cause steering wheels to squeak, was initially noticed in September in two vehicles in Europe.
