Companies have a growing incentive to put cash into buildings, equipment and other assets rather than dividends and stock repurchases, according to Liz Ann Sonders, Charles Schwab & Co.’s chief investment strategist.

The CHART OF THE DAY illustrates how Sonders drew this conclusion, outlined two days ago in a report. She tracked the average age of U.S. fixed assets in private hands, as compiled annually by the Commerce Department.
