The main Catalan nationalist parties pushing for a vote on independence split today after the Constitutional Court in Madrid temporarily blocked their plans for a ballot.
While regional President Artur Mas decided to halt campaigning ahead of the disputed vote to avoid breaching Spanish law, his strongest ally, Esquerra Republicana, vowed to continue pressing Catalans to back independence in the referendum planned for Nov. 9. Alfred Bosch, Esquerra’s leader in the Spanish parliament, said the will of the Catalan people carries more weight than the ruling of the court.
