Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions to divide Ukraine have been a “wake-up call” for Europe that “nothing should be taken for granted, including security and peace,” the European Union envoy to the U.S. said.

By annexing Crimea and supporting pro-Russian rebels seeking to split eastern Ukraine, “Mr. Putin told us” that “there’s more need than ever for the transatlantic alliance,” EU Ambassador Joao Vale de Almeida said today at a Bloomberg Government breakfast in Washington.
