The death of Joan Rivers after a routine procedure at a doctor-owned surgery center may have been a “one in one million” event, though an aging population could boost the numbers at such outpatient centers in the future.

That’s the concern from anesthesiology experts who say the centers generally need to go out of their way to identify pre-existing conditions in patients because some facilities may not have all of the emergency equipment a hospital would.
