Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Charles Plosser said employers aren’t able to hire the more highly trained workers they need, specifically in science, technology, engineering and math.

The U.S. educational system “needs to be upgraded to prepare young people” for so-called STEM jobs, and isn’t keeping pace, Plosser, who has a policy vote this year, said today at the reserve bank’s Reinventing Older Communities conference. He didn’t discuss the broader state of the economy or monetary policy.
