A case of Romanee Conti 1988 Domaine de la Romanee Conti from Burgundy’s Cote de Nuits region sold for 105,750 pounds ($178,500) at a two-day Christie’s International Plc London wine auction ended May 2.

A case of Romanee Conti 1988 Domaine de la Romanee Conti from Burgundy’s Cote de Nuits region sold for 105,750 pounds ($178,500) at a Christie’s International Plc London sale as collectors continued to seek historic vintages.

Three bottles of the same producer’s 1990 wine sold for 35,250 pounds in the two-day auction that ended on May 2, while a case of Chateau Petrus 1982 from Bordeaux’s Pomerol district fetched the same, Christie’s said in an e-mailed statement.

The auction took place as investors and collectors turned to older vintages from top labels as the sales campaign for the 2013 Bordeaux vintage drew to a close amid price cuts by leading producers. The Liv-ex 50 Index of top Bordeaux wines has fallen for eight consecutive months.

“The auction saw strong international participation throughout,” Chris Munro, head of Christie’s London wine department, said in the statement. The sale fetched a total 1.78 million pounds, according to Christie’s.

Other leading wines included two three-bottle lots of Romanee Conti DRC Burgundy, one from 1988 and the other from 1989, which sold for 23,500 pounds each, 12 bottles of Armand Rousseau Chambertin-Clos de Beze 1990, which fetched 21,150 pounds, and two cases of Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2000, one of which sold for 17,625 pounds and the other for 16,450 pounds, according to Christie’s.
