The CHART OF THE DAY shows prices of furniture and household items increased 2.1 percent from a year earlier, the most since 1981, while prices of durable household goods such as microwave ovens and vacuum cleaners jumped 7.3 percent, the biggest gain since 1980. More broadly, consumer prices excluding energy and fresh food climbed 0.8 percent, the most in 16 years, government data showed last week.
