Crimea will join Russia once lawmakers in Moscow pass the necessary legislation and there’s nothing the West can do to stop the process, according to the separatist Ukrainian region’s deputy parliamentary speaker.

Crimea is being pushed out of Ukraine after anti-government demonstrators in Kiev deposed President Viktor Yanukovych, Sergei Tsekov said in a phone interview. A bill allowing the region to become part of Russia, which keeps its Black Sea Fleet in the port of Sevastopol, will follow a Crimean referendum on secession set for March 16, he said.
