Samsung Donates $3 Million as Thanks for DeGeneres Oscar Selfie

Samsung Electronics (005930) Co. will make a $3 million donation to two charities picked by Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres as a thank-you for her in-show selfie that broke records on Twitter.

The photo was shot with a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, giving the Suwon, South Korea-based electronics maker valuable publicity before a U.S. television audience of 43 million. The post was retweeted more than 2.8 million times. The money will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Humane Society, said Ashley Wimberly, a U.S. spokeswoman for Samsung.

“We wanted to say thanks for doing this,” Wimberly said in an interview. “It was an incredible moment.”
