Nov. 18 (Bloomberg) -- As historians and journalistsdowngrade the legacy of President John F. Kennedy on the 50thanniversary of his death this week, ordinary citizens around theglobe will remember a cherished figure.

More than all but the greatest U.S. presidents -- GeorgeWashington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt -- Kennedyis an icon of American political culture. Yet, as New York TimesExecutive Editor Jill Abramson observed recently, there hasnever been a major historical work on the Kennedy presidency, acontrast with significant presidents before him and severalwho followed.
