Chile’s first ever primary elections this weekend will probably confirm former leader Michelle Bachelet as the favorite before presidential elections in November, raising the prospect of higher corporate taxes following two years of student protests.
Bachelet, who led Chile from 2006 to 2010, is expected to beat three other aspirants on June 30 to become the opposition coalition’s candidate for the November vote, according to opinion polls. Andres Allamand is expected to win the candidature for the ruling alliance.
