Queen Elizabeth II to Miss Commonwealth Meeting in Sri Lanka

Queen Elizabeth II, the U.K. monarch who is also head of the 54 nations of the Commonwealth, will not attend its meeting in Sri Lanka later this year and will instead send her heir, Prince Charles, her office said today.

Commonwealth leaders meet every two years to discuss global and Commonwealth issues, and to agree on collective policies and initiatives in a grouping that represents more than 2 billion people. The meeting this year will be held in Colombo from Nov. 15 to Nov. 17.

“The queen will be represented at this year’s Commonwealth heads of government meeting by the Prince of Wales,” Buckingham Palace said in an e-mailed statement, referring to Charles by his official title. The queen is age 87.
