Richie Havens, Woodstock Festival’s Opening Act, Dies at 72

Richie Havens, the New York City folk singer thrust by circumstance onto center stage as the opening act of Woodstock, the legendary 1969 music festival, has died. He was 72.

He died yesterday of a heart attack at his home in Jersey City, New Jersey, according to Tim Drake, president of his booking agent, The Roots Agency of Westwood, New Jersey.
