Feb. 19 (Bloomberg) -- With Congress in no hurry toprevent across-the-board spending cuts starting next week,President Barack Obama again urged lawmakers to cobbletogether a smaller package of tax and spending changesto avert the first $85 billion in reductions.

“Not to kick the can down the road,” Obama said at theWhite House, but to give Congress “time to work together on aplan that finishes the job of deficit reduction in a sensibleway.”
