Al-Azhar Scholars Elect New Grand Mufti for Egypt, MENA Says

Feb. 11 (Bloomberg) --A body of senior scholars at Egypt’s Al-Azhar, the Sunni Muslim world’s preeminent religious institution, elected Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim, as the country’s new grand mufti.

Abdel-Karim, a professor of comparative jurisprudence at Al-Azhar University, will succeed Ali Gomaa, whose term will finish at the end of the month, the state-run Middle East News Agency said. Abdel-Karim’s selection will be presented to President Mohamed Mursi to issue a decree appointing the new mufti, it said.
