June 22 (Bloomberg) -- Mitt Romney was in Michigan thisweek trying to make it competitive in the presidential election. It’s a steep climb for the native Michigander because PresidentBarack Obama’s auto bailout, which Romney opposed, has helpedbring the state’s unemployment rate down by 5.7 points since2009.

But Romney has a strong ally there: legislation beingpushed this month by his fellow Republicans aimed at preventingthe nonpartisan League of Women Voters from undertaking thevoter-registration drives it has sponsored for nearly a century.
