Dec. 28 (Bloomberg) -- When Nelson Rockefeller dropped outof the Republican presidential race in June 1964, BarryGoldwater was left with an apparently insurmountable delegatelead and, almost certainly, the task of defeating incumbentPresident Lyndon Johnson.

Republican moderates were left with a question: Should theycontinue to fight Goldwater and his conservative movement, whichthey saw as threatening not only the nation’s progress, but alsothe future of their party?
