Jim O’Neill, the economist who coined the acronym BRIC, may again be ahead of his time. Or perhaps he just has bad timing.

His new book, "The Growth Map," reached stores this month with predictions of "rosy prospects" for the BRIC nations of Brazil, Russia, India and China and other developing markets. Yet economic growth in many of these countries is slowing these days, casting a shadow over the sunny forecasts he dispenses from his desk at Goldman Sachs Group Inc.
