Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh arrived in Saudi Arabia to sign a power-transfer agreement with his opponents that was brokered by the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, Yemen’s state-run television said today.
The Gulf initiative and its mechanism will be signed today in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, the United Nations secretary-general’s special adviser on Yemen, Jamal Benomar, told reporters today in Sana’a. Under the terms of the agreement, Saleh will transfer power to his deputy, Abdurabuh Mansur Hadi, followed 90 days later by a presidential election, Benomar said.
