Bermuda Issues Tropical Storm Warning as Sean Nears Island

Bermuda issued a tropical storm warning for high winds and heavy surf ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season’s 18th named storm, Sean.

Sean, with top winds of 50 miles (85 kilometers) per hour, was about 470 miles southwest of Bermuda, moving west at 3 mph, the National Hurricane Center said today in a website advisory at 7 a.m. Miami time. Bermuda’s warning means winds of at least 39 mph from the approaching storm are expected within 36 hours.

The hurricane center said some strengthening is possible today and tonight, with ocean swells generated by Sean expected to affect the southeastern U.S. coast and Bermuda the next couple of days. “Life-threatening surf” may occur, it said.

The NHC forecasts Sean will turn north, then northeastward and pass north of Bermuda in two days. The Bermuda Weather Service said Sean is expected to pass within 118 nautical miles (136 miles) of the island group at 5 a.m. on Nov. 11. Sean’s tropical storm-force winds extend 290 miles from its center.
