Netflix Inc. (NFLX), a U.S. provider of mail-order films and streaming video, will begin selling subscriptions in the U.K. and Ireland in 2012, putting it in competition with Amazon.com Inc (AMZN)’s LoveFilm.

The company’s streaming service, which lets users watch movies and television shows via an Internet connection, will be available in the two countries early next year, Netflix said in a statement today. Details on pricing and content were not disclosed.

Netflix moved into Latin America and the Caribbean this year and has more than 25 million customers.

Netflix did not say whether it will introduce a subscription mail-order DVD service in Europe. The company has been moving away from mail order and earlier this month ended an attempt to spin off the business.

Spokesman Steve Swasey did not immediately return a call before business hours.

Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, rose 5 percent to $117.04 in New York on Oct. 21. The shares have declined 33 percent this year.
