A photo of a murdered woman on the front page of a leading Turkish newspaper caused uproar on social media websites and intensified debate about the portrayal of domestic violence in Turkey, amid campaigns to stop the abuse and killings of women.

The photo, which ran as the top item on the front page of Haberturk’s print edition today, showed a shirtless, bloodstained and bruised woman on a stretcher with a kitchen knife planted deep into her back. The photo was heavily criticized by readers, including prominent celebrities and some of the newspaper’s own staff, on social media, and was condemned by Turkey’s family affairs minister, Fatma Sahin.
