President Obama’s Jobs Speech Attracts 31.4 Million U.S. Viewers

President Barack Obama’s televised address to a joint session of Congress yesterday drew an audience of 31.4 million U.S. TV viewers, Nielsen said.

The speech, in which the president called for $447 billion in spending and tax cuts to stimulate the economy, was seen in almost 21 percent of U.S. TV homes, New York-based Nielsen said today in an e-mailed statement. By comparison, Obama’s May 1 speech on the death of Osama bin Laden was watched by an average of 56.5 million U.S. viewers, Nielsen said.
