Tens of thousands of people rallied across Yemen after Friday prayers in support of a national council of opposition parties united against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The 143-member national council, established on Aug. 17, will elect a chairman and deputies tomorrow at a meeting in Sana’a, the capital, Mohammed al-Sabri, a council member, said by telephone today. The council will also elect a 20-member executive board, he said.
