NY Meatpacking District Draws Levi’s, Loses McCartney

Jeffrey Kalinsky opened a fashion boutique in Manhattan’s meatpacking district in 1999. In those days, he said, the neighborhood was “lawless.”

“There was meat and blood and smells,” Kalinsky, 48, said in a telephone interview. “Obviously it was not a walking, trafficked neighborhood.”
