Four jailed Mapuche indigenous activists will appeal to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights after Chile’s Supreme Court declined to reopen their case, a spokeswoman for the activists said.

In a decision handed down by Justice Nibaldo Segura, the Supreme Court reduced prison sentences for Hector Llaitul, Ramon Llanquileo, Jose Huenuche and Jonathan Huillical from as long as 25 years. While the Supreme Court overturned a lower court’s attempted murder ruling, it didn’t call for a retrial.
