Thousands of Yemeni protesters gathered outside the main university in the capital, Sana’a, demanding that President Ali Abdullah Saleh step down, echoing mass demonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt.

“Thirty years of rule is enough,” the protesters shouted. Saleh, a U.S. ally, became leader of North Yemen in 1978, and has ruled the Republic of Yemen since the north and south merged in 1990. He won elections in 1999 and 2006.
