Obama Resubmits Berwick Nomination to Senate for Medicare Post

President Barack Obama re-nominated Donald Berwick to be administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Norman Eisen as ambassador to the Czech Republic.

Using recess appointments, Obama put both men into their respective positions last year after the Senate failed to act on confirming them. The procedure allows a president to fill a position without Senate confirmation when Congress isn’t in session.

Berwick was installed at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on July 7. His nomination had been stalled since its submission in April because of opposition from some Republicans. Obama put Eisen, most recently special counsel to the president for ethics and government reform, in place as the U.S. envoy in Prague on Dec. 29,.

Berwick, a Harvard University scholar and longtime critic of the U.S. health care system, has become part of the political fight over the implementation of the health care law enacted last year.
