The former ruling party of ousted Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali dissolved its leadership committee after key figures quit the organization amid demands that the three-day-old interim government exclude its members, state television said.

The resignations stop short of the demands of protesters who object to the continuing influence of Ben Ali-era politicians in a unity government intended to give all factions a voice. Security forces fired warning shots today in the capital, Tunis, as hundreds of demonstrators continued to push for the exclusion of Constitutional Democratic Party members. Protesters tore the lighted sign off the party’s headquarters.
