Connecticut's Lieberman Gets U.S. Senate Challenge From Democrat Bysiewicz

U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent who caucuses with the Democrats, is being challenged for his seat in 2012 by the state’s former Democratic secretary of state.

Susan Bysiewicz announced her candidacy on her Facebook page today. “I am running for the U.S. Senate for the same reason I entered public service: I want this state to be a better place for my children and yours,” she said.

Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic nominee for vice president, was re-elected by running as an independent in 2006 after losing his party’s primary race. He supported Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona for president in 2008.
