Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. plans to shut the Trans Alaska system this weekend to install a bypass following a leak on the line that carries 15 percent of U.S. crude oil production.

The line, restarted late Jan. 11 after being closed Jan. 8, will be shut for 36 hours, state regulators said in a statement yesterday. Throughput on the line fell 25 percent today to about 320,000 barrels daily from 400,000 yesterday, Matt Carle, a company spokesman, said in a telephone interview.
