U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates meets China’s President Hu Jintao today after Chinese commitments for stabilizing military relations fell short of setting specific timelines in talks yesterday.
In Gates’s first day of discussions in Beijing yesterday, Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie agreed to consider a proposal to begin regular strategic security talks, a year after China cut military ties to protest arms sales to Taiwan. Liang didn’t commit to a timeframe for starting such talks nor for reaching agreement on a structure for more regular contacts.
