Algeria plans to increase its soft wheat cultivation area by 40 percent to cut its import bill, said Noureddine Kehhal, the head of the state-run grains office.

The North African country is working on expanding the area cultivated by the grain to 700,000 hectares (1.72 million acres) from 500,000 hectares, Kehhal, director general of the Office Algerien Interprofessionnel de Cereales, told national radio.
