Debswana Diamond Co.’s 24 billion-pula ($3.63 billion) expansion of Jwaneng, Botswana’s biggest diamond mine, will create 1,700 jobs, President Ian Khama said.
The project, which will extend the life of the mine to 2024 from a previous estimate of 2017, is the biggest capital commitment in the southern African nation’s history, Khama said at a ceremony today to mark the start of the project, 160 kilometers southwest of the capital, Gaborone. An additional 102 million carats of diamonds are expected to be produced after the extension, according to Debswana.
